HRVST, Ch.14: The Highest Under The Sun
When the sun is at its highest above a point below no shadows are cast
When the sun is at its highest above certain points on Earth, no shadows are cast.
This doesn’t happen everywhere on Earth, because of the tilt of its axis.
Inside a band wrapped around the Earth’s waist, its equator, every place that faces the sun will have a moment of total light.
Only those places between 23.5 degrees north and 23.5 degrees south will have their moment under the sun without shadow.
Twice a year, when the sun appears above the equator, will a day have equal night. Equinox.
Only those places that will face the sun straight on will become a subsolar point, the closest point on Earth facing the sun at that moment.
Inside most places, there will always be shadows cast, even under the brightest day.
This is just the way it is, but that’s not a reason to stay.
Find an place to face an apex sun straight on for a moment of total light, no shadows.

“We’re tapped into their feed. They’re signaling for a breach. They’re moving in, two by two standard formation.
-static-
They’re converging on the Hall. We’ve made it hot enough for their infrared, as if it’s packed full of civvies moving up the stairwells and elevators to the rooftop.”
“Good, signal the transport to turn on its approach lights.”
“Copy that. Transport lights on.”
“Kill the power inside the Hall as soon as they’re inside the stairwells.”
-static-
“Copy that. It’s dark, they’re on scopes. Smoke ready.”
“Now. Let’s draw in the last of them.”
“Depot, is the train ready?”
“Cap, Depot. We’re getting them onboard the train. Hold on, someone’s missing.”
“Repeat please.”
“Cap, someone is missing. We think it’s one of the kids.”
“God. Okay, make sure everyone else is on the train before we drop the ship.”
“Cap, I can go up and look.”
“No, I’ll go. How much time until the transport is on top of Grissom?”
-static-
“We read inbound ETA 15 minutes.”
“Okay. TwoTwo, get them on the train, right before we throw the switch, go straight to Collins Station. The administrator Aleksander closed it for maintenance. When Grissom goes up, they’re going to have emergency recalls of all transports, enough confusion to give you cover.”
“Cap?”
-static-
“Tommy, prep the train for Shackleton. We might have to take someone with us.”
“With us?”
“We can’t leave anyone behind, we’re about to drop a ship on the roof and bury Hyperion’s muscle.”
-static-
“Copy that, Captain.”
The Captain left the depot substation and climbed a ladder up to Grissom Hall.
Notes:
For those who feel like they’ve been dropped in the middle of things:
You don’t need to know it but in case you’re wondering, this story is being written on the fly, day by day.
This chapter is from the POV of the “good guys” who hope to pull off a rescue plan of a group of civilians as revealed in Chapter 11.
In Chapter 10, the same events are told from the POV of the “bad guys” want to kidnap that same group of civilians.
You are reading the last few chapters for a book I began writing a few months ago. We’re very close to the end the book, days away.
