I see an immoveable feast of the same stuff swallowed up as if there’s no tomorrow.
The problem with acronyms is that there aren’t enough to go around.
There’s a shortage of meme building blocks, short-hand for some of the dumbest ideas of modern social network society. FOMO, YOLO, and whatever alphabet soup TLDR packages there are for mimetic desires of the thin variety (extra Girard on the side pls).
You can’t miss out, so FOMO, because you don’t dare miss out. You should have been there, man. Limited time offer, the count-down timer is running, we’re running low on infinitely scalable, replaceable, viral, trendy whoever and whatever of the moment.
You only live once, YOLO, so go do this one thing that wasn’t really your idea in the first place but you go all in because you can’t, or don’t dare, imagine there’s other options. You don’t dare think that living in the present allows for actually doing other things. Only once, man.
I just want to breathe, I need some space, we got to get out of this place (ala The “Stones” tune), and give us little more of that, so more time, more grace.
So NO to the FOMO of the familiar and the YOLO of the fake time scarcity.
We can like the next new things, explore new places, meet the new next some-ones, even if no-one likes the same, or is chasing them with endless thirsty likes and follows for the same damn some-ones and somethings.
We can do better. We are not blind. We can make up our own mind. We decide what will matter. We can like the things or the someone, even if no-one likes it or is chasing them with endless thirsty likes and follows. We can move on. We can take our sweet time with the new cake and eat it too.
So go, go love just trying something new, meeting someone new, and being okay with things not coming together despite all the animus of FOMO and avarice of YOLO.
We can love someone and something new, we can leave behind the old badges we wore, and take up new banners for waving on new territories.
Moving on.
So pumped to follow!
