Welcome to a piece “From The Future”. Each week, I alternate between essays or fiction.
This post is an update about my work. My next post will be a first chapter of a new novel.
After that, I am eager to finish an essay riffing about an age of post-platform privacy.
Future + Fiction is the formula for everything, whether it’s an essay, story or chapter.
Most pieces are best read online, via the Substack App, when you have fifteen minutes.
A Backstory, Some News and Updates.
Over two-and-a-half years ago, in Spring 2021, I finished writing, after 30 days straight, a story. It was my third time writing daily for 30 days, the first for one story. I had a lot inside to deal with (and some of you know about it).
I learned three things: I can write every day, I can press “send”, and I liked it.
I did it 5 more times, and the story grew into a book, the first, “Box Of Stars”. Soon after, I started a second one, “Harvest”.
Last late summer, I joined a new writing community, started over with this Substack, “From The Future”, and added essays to the mix, and best of all, I made new friends, and “met” some of you thanks to your kind interest.
Last year, I finished “Harvest” on Thanksgiving-eve, (posted the drafted final chapters on a substack page), and began a third, “Retrieve”.
A few months ago, I had a long chat with Jim O’Shaughnessy on his podcast, and something happened the other day. Jim’s OS Ventures announced the formation of “Infinite Media”, helmed by “Liberty Highlights” great writer and curator “Liberty RPF”, as well as “Infinite Books”, a new press. They reached out to me.
I have the honor to be chosen as one of the first authors to be published by Infinite Books, along with an amazing artist and storyteller, “Tinkered Thinking”, and a brilliant writer, Ed William, who writes at Infinite Loops.
The announcement is part of the debut of the first issue of “OSV Quarterly Magazine”, with exciting pieces featuring the O’Shaughnessy Ventures community, projects, and new ventures. I write about the future in different ways but the OSV community has members who are way out ahead, almost living there and creating it.
Other Updates:
I am working with my friend Dylan Sullivan, “DylanO”, founder of Essayful, on getting “Box Of Stars” ready for the world. I am lucky to have such a brilliant friend’s help.
I am finishing my first round of edits of “Harvest”, my “prequel” to “Box Of Stars”.
I will finish the draft of “Retrieve”, perhaps during “NaNoWriMo” (“National Novel Writing Month”), where participants write 50,000 word novels in November. I’ll see.
Inspired by the fourth community I’m immersed in, a growing universe of Substack’s fiction writers, I’ve got a core of a fourth novel, entitled at this time as “Weekendless”.
With luck, I’ll have a first draft chapter for “Weekendless” by this Friday evening.
Next week, I’ll have an essay, riffing about a wish for an age of post-platform privacy.
I like to open and close with music. Here is a selection which helped inspire the “vibe” for what will be “Weekendless”.
You're a busy guy! Congrats 🥳
Congrats! Love this for you!
